Vascular Protheses
Vascular prostheses are used for people in whom vascular sections are severely damaged, for example by injuries, blockages due to illness or the like. They are intended to replace the natural blood vessels. They are implanted during operations. Often they must also be used for bypass operations if there is not a sufficiently large vessel at the desired location. They are usually only used for arteries, rarely for veins. The first vascular prostheses were implanted in Germany in 1952. Such interventions have been routine since the 1960s. Vascular prostheses are made of certain plastics, either PET or PTFE. PET plastic is used more for large vessels, PTFE is better suited for smaller vessels. The human body adapts these prostheses more and more to the body's own vessels and causes the plastic vessels to be clad with a layer of blood platelets and fibrin after a period of time. The success or durability of the prostheses depends above all on their size. The large vascular prostheses, i.e. those with a large diameter, have a relatively good and long service life. The smaller the implanted vessel, the shorter its service life. Problems that can occur over time are vessel blockages, vessel infections, or general problems with the implant material.
