Cathodic protection is an effective method for protecting steel from corrosion. Most of the pipelines have a cathodic protection installation. The basic principle of cathodic protection is simple. A metal dissolution is reduced through the application of a cathodic current. The ARS cathodic protection team build new cathodic protection installations and maintain existing installations. However, the main job is to verify the function of the cathodic protection with periodical surveys. For this job is our cathodic protection team equipped with state of the arte measurement devices.

The rate of corrosion of metallic materials in soils or water depends on the potential E of the material in the surrounding medium. In general, the rate of corrosion decreases as the potential shifts towards more negative values. The metal/electrolyte potential, at which the corrosion rate is < 0.01 mm per year, is the protective potential Ep. The corrosion rate is so low that corrosion damage can be prevented during the intended service life. The criterion for cathodic corrosion protection is thus: E ≤ Ep.
The implementation of this physically justified requirement means that the protection criterion must be fulfilled and proven at every coating defect of the object to be protected.
