In metalworking, roll claddings are used to apply a higher quality metal layer to a metal with a lower value. This can be, for example, a copper layer on steel or a gold or silver layer on brass.Because the connection of the two materials should be permanent, i.e. inseparable, temperature and high pressure should be combined in roll cladding. The purpose of the process is to temper the surface, e.g. to increase its hardness or sliding ability, to make it more resistant to corrosion or to improve its appearance.The process is particularly suitable for the production of clad sheets. This composite material consists of the base material and one or more layers of the higher-quality material. The material to be rolled can be applied on one or both sides. Carbon steel is often used as the base material for the production of clad sheets. This material offers high strength and can also be used for load-bearing parts with the appropriate material thickness. The rolled layer of the higher-quality material then provides corrosion protection, for example.
