The term hickeys is used to describe various things. Probably the best-known term is used in the glass industry. Here glass panes are made from the raw material. These are called bull's-eye discs. Butzenscheiben:Butzenscheiben are frequently installed in historical buildings. These are round pieces of glass with a thickening - the hickeys. In the vernacular they are also jokingly called bottle bottoms, but they are not. The invention and use of crown glass dates back to the early Middle Ages. Glass panes of the size we use today could not yet be produced at that time. Smaller discs were used, which were assembled to the desired size by means of lead mounting. Characteristic for the slugs is the unavoidable thickening during the manufacturing process. It is located in the middle of the circular disc and represents the extension of the glassmaker's pipe. The edge of the disc is also raised.Butzenscheiben were very popular until the 17th century. Replaced by other methods of window production, they were rather unpopular for a while, but got new impetus during the Romantic period.Not to be confused with the round bull's-eye panes with the square curved panes, which can often be seen in farmhouses or in modern front doors. These windows have only the name in common with the real hickeys.Aluminium butzen:Aluminium hickeys are also manufactured. They are a semi-finished product for further processing. Among other things, cans or tubes are pressed from them. These are then used in the pharmaceutical industry, in the chemical industry and in many other areas of industry.Due to different alloys the material is adapted to the different areas. This ensures that the material does not"come into contact" with the contents and you can use the cans or tubes for the food or pharmaceutical industry without worries.
