Tool Steels
Tools are required for material processing. This applies to both manual and machine processing. These tools are made of a special steel, the tool steel. Depending on the intended use of the tools, a distinction is made between unalloyed and alloyed tool steels. Unalloyed tool steel usually contains not only carbon but also a small amount of tungsten. The surface of the tools made of this steel can be significantly increased by quenching and tempering. However, this only applies to the surface. Unalloyed tool steels cannot be through-hardened. They are used for the production of simple tools. Alloyed tool steel contains additives such as chromium, nickel or tungsten. Tools made of such material are considerably more resistant and can be through-hardened. They are used for tasks in which they are exposed to higher stresses High temperatures can occur during material processing, such as automated milling with the aid of CNC milling machines. Tools made of cold work steel can be used at a possible maximum temperature of 200 degrees. Such tools can be made of unalloyed tool steel, provided that the required service life does not require alloyed tool steel. Hot-working steel up to 400 degrees and so-called high-speed steel up to 600 degrees are required. These two qualities can only be achieved with alloyed tool steel.
