Squirrel-cage motors are so-called asynchronous motors. They are much simpler in design than simple electric motors. Unlike conventional motors, their rotor does not consist of a coil wound from wire, which is supplied via slip rings, but of a cage with solid metal coils, which is constantly short-circuited. The basic procedure of the squirrel cage motor was already developed at the end of the 19th century. The magnetic field of the metal cage induces a so-called rotor voltage. Since the metal bars of the cage are short-circuited, rotor currents also flow here and generate their own magnetic field. The coupling of the two magnetic fields finally generates a rotary movement of the rotor. The squirrel cage motors are generally low-maintenance and low-wear (since there is no brush wear, as with normal electric motors) and therefore have a long service life. However, their efficiency is lower. Their field of application is extensive. They are used, for example, as pump drives, fans, compressors, drives for industrial trucks, drives for presses and extruders, drives for electric and hybrid vehicles, as machine tool drives, as auxiliary machines on ships and locomotives and in power stations.
