Valve springs are an important and indispensable component in the construction of four-stroke internal combustion engines. The valves are used to introduce the fuel/air mixture into the combustion chambers of the cylinders or to exhaust the exhaust gases of the combustion process. When closed, they are pressed tightly into the valve seats by the valve springs and opened by the camshafts against the resistance of the valve springs. Reliable sealing of the combustion chambers is ensured both by the precise mechanical machining of the valves and valve seats and by the valve springs.Valve springs are highly stressed special parts which have to perform heavy work on the engines, some of which are rotating at high speeds. They must withstand extreme loads reliably and for a long time, since fractures caused by material fatigue can lead to expensive consequences. In the history of engine construction, various valve systems have been experimented with. Torsion bars or hairpin springs are examples. Today, single coil springs are used throughout or double coil springs for particularly high loads.Pneumatically controlled spring elements are a special type of valve springs. These can be found primarily in racing engines, e.g. for formula racing.
