Thermal cameras, also known as thermal imaging cameras or thermal imaging devices, are imaging devices. They are very similar to ordinary cameras, but differ from those in that they receive infrared radiation. This radiation is in the spectral range of 3.5 to 14 µm due to the characteristic emission wavelengths around the ambient temperature. The method behind this particular camera is called thermography. By using this technology, otherwise invisible heat radiation of objects and bodies can be made visible to the human eye. Infrared radiation is used to collect temperature distributions on the object in question and display them with the thermal camera. It is also possible to display distant objects and bodies as well as fast-moving motifs. The latter use special thermal cameras called high-speed thermography systems. They are able to take more than 1000 pictures per second.Thermocameras are almost exclusively in the professional use. Classic users are fire brigade (e.g. search for glow nests), industry (such as inspection of electrical facilities), federal police (e.g. surveillance of national borders), scientists (e.g. archaeological investigations) and physicians (such as locating local sources of inflammation). Another important field of application for this camera type is the military. There it is used for reconnaissance and observation in darkness or low visibility.
