Although the art of printing in the form we know comes from Germany, paper production is an Asian invention. Then as now, paper is produced in a similar way. The starting material is vegetable fibres. These are divided as finely as possible and mixed with glue and water to a paper pulp. In the next step, the paper pulp is scooped onto a fine grid. Most of the water must now drain off. To speed up the process, the sheets are pressed. After pressing, the sheets are carefully removed by hand and hung up for final drying. The product is hand-made paper and today it is a very valuable material because of its craftsmanship.A similar process is also used in industrial paper production. The use of rolls and drying machines makes it possible to produce the paper almost endlessly. The end product is the paper roll. In the past wood was almost exclusively used for the production of inexpensive papers, today it is more and more cellulose. Although cellulose is also made from plant fibres and mainly from wood, it lacks a crucial component: lignin. Lignin is a resin in wood that takes on a yellowish hue when exposed to UV radiation. That was and is undesirable. The paper keeps its pure colour since cellulose has been used.In addition to plant fibres, paper is also made from rags. This makes paper significantly more durable and is used, for example, in the production of paper for banknote printing.
