The term plastics machinery is very complex and covers several completely different areas. This includes, for example, plants that produce plastics in industrial quantities and deliver them to other industrial companies as semi-finished products for further processing. These machines are used in the production of plastics and, as complex plants, usually belong to large chemical companies. About 90 percent of all plastics produced worldwide belong to the types polyethylene (PE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyurethane (PU), polystyrene, polypropylene and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The plastics are often supplied for further processing in the form of granulate or powder. Special machines are used for the production of synthetic rubber or epoxy resins. Further processing takes place, for example, in special foaming machines. Injection moulding machines are widely used. The granulate is melted and pressed under pressure into moulds where it solidifies and takes on the desired shape. This is how most plastic parts, from car dashboards to cups, are made. Other plastics machines produce continuous films which are used, for example, in the production of plastic bags or carrier bags. The injection moulding machines work according to the same principle as the casting plants in the iron and steel industry. Other plastic machines, on the other hand, are further developments or special forms of machines in the metal processing industry and are used for further processing (for example milling) of plastic parts. In total, almost 400,000 people work in the plastics processing industry in Germany.
