The stamp card is used in various companies, especially in industrial companies, as proof of the work performed. For this purpose, the stamp card is inserted into the so-called stamp clock at the start of work, which marks the start of work on the card. The same process then takes place at the end of work. At the end of the month it is easier to perform the work performed due to the recorded times.

In the years after 1850 the time clock was invented, when at the same time industrialization was progressing more and more. The stamp cards were kept quite simple at the beginning. Meanwhile, they provide information about the total hours worked in a month. This in turn enabled the accounting department to simplify the respective wage calculation for the payment of wages.

One of the most prominent companies was IBM, which abolished the time clocks just before the turn of the millennium. However, the cardboard stamp card is no longer used as often as it was replaced by a chip card in many areas.
