Biotechnology, also referred to by the synonym bioengineering or biotech is a relatively young, interdisciplinary science. It researches the possible uses of cells, enzymes and whole organisms in technology. Its goal consists of the development of more efficient or even new processes for the manufacturing of chemical compounds, in the use of mechanisms of nature in technology and in the development of methods of diagnosis.

Biotechnology knowledge can be used in various fields of natural life . Findings from microbiology, genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology are associated with knowledge of bioinformatics and the engineering sciences, especially biotechnology techniques based on biocatalysis or bioconversion and translated into practical applications.

Such biotechnological applications have been developed for thousands of years. The production of beer and wine through the use of yeast is one of them. The production of cheese, butter or sour milk through the addition of enzymes and micro-organisms is one of them.
