There's a secret recipe for turning salt water into fresh water. This secret recipe is called reverse osmosis. In osmosis, substances dissolved in a liquid (e.g. salt in water) are retained by a semipermeable membrane. For example, the membrane allows liquids (water) through, but does not allow dissolved substances (salt) through. This happens all the time in cells. Water penetrates through the water-permeable cell wall into the salty cell interior. For example, the additional water in the cells causes cherries to burst after a downpour. (This would not happen if there was salty rain, because then there would be no concentration gradient Osmosis always creates a pressure (this causes the cells to burst). Practically, osmosis can also be reversed by applying pressure. The salt content of seawater can be reduced, for example, by pressing the seawater through a fine-pored filter under pressure. The salts are retained through the fine pores of the filter and the water penetrates the filter without any problems. With reverse osmosis, the concentration of substances dissolved in liquids can be changed by applying a pressure and using a semipermeable membrane. Exactly this principle is used in reverse osmosis plants. They are used for drinking water treatment, water decalcification and even applications for urine treatment are discussed.
