Preparation technology refers to a branch of process technology, this means it represents an area of processing through which a product emerges from a raw material. This happens for the most part through a chemical, physical or also biological procedure. Process technology is therefore a step between the mining of raw material and the manufacturing of products.

Preparation technology is used for example in the changing of mineral properties. Here the preparation technology is demonstrated through techniques such as crushing, cooling or evaporating. Also the composition of a substance can also be changed by preparation technology through filtration or distillation.

Through preparation technology and its processes raw materials such as concrete, plasters, sand-lime brick and glass are considered typical materials for industrial manufacturing. Also preparation technology is taught in different departments.

A new and especially important area of application of technology is represented today in material separation, which serves to protect the environment. A well known example can be shown here through the efficient transport of rubbish and the environmentally friendly processing. The separation of different waste materials plays an important role so that it can be effectively processed later on.
