Surveillance technolgy is always used when an object or a economic good needs to be protected from being accessed or taken by an unauthorized third party. Surveillance technology is used as a result in priave as well as commercial areas. Normally surveillance technology assists the work or object protection through its operation.

The best example for surveillance technology is of course security cameras. Everyone knows the security cameras which are used to record on tape every activity at an automated teller machine (ATM). Another example from the financial world constitutes the vibration senors which immediately activate an alarm in vaults when a blast occurs or another violent entrance. But also the general room monitoring by means of smoke detectors show the practical use of surveillance technology for the protection of the common good. Countless instruments are enlised for factory security services, production monitoring, preventative fire protection and safety technology.

Also in the private and public sphere survelliance technology can no longer be done without. A widely discussed example are the electronic shackles in house arrest. Also here surveillance namely the accussed can be implemented by means of technical assistance. In the unterground and street trains of large german towns innumerable camera systems are used and also large spaces in urban areas are monitored by means of modern technology. Almost every private household makes use of the original surveillance instrument: a light with motion detectors.

The absence of an alarm system does not of course mean that an unauthorised entrance in a protected alarm won't trigger an alarm.
