A motion detector detects movement in the surrounding area through a electronic sensor. It works like a switch through the movements in the surroundings. The motion is very often used as an alarm trigger or for turning on lights. A motion sensor detects movement through infrared radiation, electromagnetic waves or ultrasound.

Some of them are used as a light switch. In a lot of houses they are used to bring light in stairwells and corridors. They also recognize from which darkness the detector should function.

On some doors burglar alarm systems are placed to trigger an alarm in case of burglary. They are used especially for properties or companies. They recognize movements at any time of day and therefore in such devices dusk sensors are installed so that motion can also be detected in the dark.

Another use is presence detectors. It is very sensitive and detects people sitting or even making slight movements. The presence detector detects even if its really dark and switches on the lights. Many of them are used also for ventilation and for heating, so some of them have second shift channel.
