Managers are people in a company equipped with corresponding competence in order to instruct other people and issue orders. These are divided between professional superior people, whose authority is obtained from work procedures and disciplinary superior people.
Managers are used in every company at all levels of hierarchy from the lowest entry level through middle management up to top management. According to qualifications and achievement level managers often have commerical power, through which they can in name of the company in complete specific scopes of transactions. Of special significance is the authority to hire and terminate employees.

How many employees a manager subordinates varies widely. In smaller companies for example the personnel management has 2 or 3 administrators to carry out this work, while in medium-sized companies the head of sales is responsible for around 5 sales representatives and 3 office based employees. In corporate groups a manager often has a few hundred or even a few thousand subordinate employees.

A considerable task for all manageres is the promotion of relevant staff. Motivating employee appraisels, suggestions for further training, performance evaluations, agreement on targets all play an important role in this. A good manager is the contact person for all personal and professional problems and finding appropriate solutions. But a manager is also responsible for work safety and the trouble-free functioning of the daily routine in a company. Thus the quality management should also be controlled or supervised.
