The mechanical or electrotechnical overhaul of older extruders often offers an inexpensive alternative to the purchase of a new extruder. By integrating modern process units, considerable increases in quality and performance can be achieved. The adjacent picture shows an approx. 20-year-old extruder whose processing unit (feed, barrel, screw) has been replaced. The old extruder was measured, a new processing unit, consisting of grooved bush, cylinder, barrier screw, was designed and assembled. With this overhaul (gearbox, fan, heating, switchgear could be reused) an increase in performance of approx. 100% was achieved at project appraisal. The output increased from approx. 90 kg/h to 160 kg/h. The conversion of the machine was carried out at the customer's premises.
