Asia is the biggest continent on earth. It covers 44.4km2 around 30% of the land and 8% of the total earth's surface. 3.2 billion inhabitants live there, 60% of the earth's population with density of 72 inhabitants per km2. This continent stretches with a mean average altitude of 950m above sea level to the northern hemisphere where it is closed by Cape Chelyuskin and the Taimyr Peninsula to Cape Bulus, on the Malay Peninsula. The extension amounts to 9000 km. To the west of Asia lies Europe and it is attached to Asia like a large peninsula. In the southwest the passage to Africa is possible across the Isthmus of Suez, to the southeast through the numerous islands of the Malay Archipelago, the passage to Australia. To the east and the north the Pacific Ocean and the Arctic Ocean separates it from the continent of America. Furthermore numerous small marginal seas are divided across it. In addition to the large peninsulas Arabia, Hindustan, Indochina, Korea and Kamchatka, separating the island arc of Japan, the Philippines and the Malay Archipelago from the mainland. 25% of the total are less than 200 meters high, but 15% are higher than 2000 m. In addition to the highest peaks of the world, including Mount Everest, the highest deepest depression are also found here. The demographic structure is determined by the extensive Ural fold mountains. These stretch from Asia Minor over the Middle East to Indochina and its continuation in the Southeast Asian island space. This young mountain system cuts North, East and South Asia apart from each other. In the south, the mountain system power lowlands and tablelands are affiliated. Northwestern take a large lowlands. Which, like the older mountain and plateaus in the east and northeast have large currents. The north drain to the Arctic Ocean, the rivers Ob, Yenisei and Lena, the east to the marginal seas of the Pacific Ocean, Amur Hwango, Yangtze and Mekong. In the south there are the rivers Salween, Ganges, Indus and Euphrates. A few rivers end in lakes or in the Caspian Sea.
