Nonwovens are loosely joined fibres which have been consolidated by various methods. In addition to the materials used, nonwovens are also subdivided into two types caused by their production, namely random fibre nonwovens (isotropic) and fibre-oriented nonwovens (anisotropic). With isotropic nonwovens, different production methods mean that the fibers do not orient themselves in one direction, but are confused, while with anisotropic nonwovens, the fibers lie significantly more frequently in one direction than the other. Nonwovens can be made of many different materials, whereby a distinction is made between four large fibre types: mineral, animal, chemical and vegetable. The fields of application for nonwovens are as varied as their fibre and production methods. In agriculture/horticulture nonwovens are used for chemical-free weed control or for light and temperature regulation. In building and vehicle technology as aeration and ventilation device or as a filter, e.g. in engines. Fleeces can also be found at home, for example in vacuum cleaners as dust and liquid filters, as stiffeners in shirt collars or linings in winter jackets, as insoles or linings in shoes and much more. In the medical industry, nonwovens are used for the production of plasters, disposable surgical clothing, face masks and diapers for all baby and incontinence products. They also serve as thermal insulation material, lining for upholstered furniture, sound insulation, fire-retardant material and as material in membrane technology, etc.
