Soaking Systems
In order to increase safety for trams and trains, a completely new switch system was developed. Derailments, because the next train under the previous tram moved the points, are no longer possible today. The setting process of a switch is carried out via a transponder which is triggered by the tram driver. In addition, a signal lights up, indicating to the driver in which direction the switch tongues are applied. From this moment on the crossover is electrically and mechanically locked and the position can only be changed by hand. A new electrical setting process is only possible when the last axis of the tram has left the switch tongues. The driver of the following train recognizes that the switch signal has gone out. With this switch system, following points can also be brought into the desired direction of travel by pressing a button. The display of the corresponding switch signals additionally indicates to the driver that all switch tongues are properly applied. If it is not the case, the signal does not light up.To increase the capacity at crossroads, trams on switches may now also meet, where a flank ride is actually possible. This regulation was cancelled with the new switch system, since the turnouts are additionally locked and an unintentional change of the switch tongues under the tram train cannot take place.Further information on this topic can be found under the following links:Switch systems, switch drives and switch construction.
