De-icing products are substances that serve to melt another substance, usually snow or ice. Road traffic is the main area of application for de-icing products, as their use can counteract snow and ice on pavements and roads. The means used are of different nature. In general, the melting point of the substance to be thawed must be reduced by using the thawing agent. By spreading de-icing salt, the frozen water is melted, forming an aqueous saline solution. This only freezes at significantly lower temperatures due to the lower melting point.As a de-icing agent, mainly salt or sand are used. The salt based agents consist mainly of common salt, i.e. sodium chloride. However, other salts such as calcium dichloride or magnesium dichloride can also be used. Sand-based de-icing agents consist of silicon dioxide. Salts such as sodium chloride are more effective thawing agents than sand. On the other hand, they are also more aggressive and harmful to cars, as they promote the formation of rust (iron oxide).To quickly sprinkle these de-icing agents on roads, winter services are used that first use large snow removal vehicles to free the road from snow with de-icing agents and then sprinkle sand.De-icing agents are also used in private households. Conventional salt is mixed with sand and sprinkled on sidewalks. Sugar is also used in emergencies. However, as this is much more expensive than salt, it is rarely used. However, one is well served with finished products, for example from the DIY store, where finished bags with salt, grit and granulates are offered.
