Shipbuilding includes the development and construction of ships. Shipbuilding is both a technical science and the industry of manufacturing ships up to their launching, including their regular inspection, repair and modernisation. First a ship is built in a model and tested as a model. The CFD software currently available is not yet powerful enough to replace such model tests. Ships are built in special factories called shipyards. Here the individual parts are cut from steel or also from light metals and joined together. The parts are cut with cutting torches. The parts belonging to the outer skin are curved and then welded together to form sections.Weld seams are nowadays laid to a large extent by automatic machines. In heavily curved regions of the hull, however, manual welding is still very much in demand. New ships are launched as early as the shell construction phase. As soon as everything is assembled, a test drive takes place. This also serves to check the speed, the behaviour in rough seas as well as the manoeuvring characteristics. The new ship will then be delivered to the owner. Occasionally, final work on the ship also takes place during the test cruise.
