In Germany, there is an enormous number of traffic signs, the least popular of which is the speed limit and the red traffic light is seen as a fun brake. But there is a very special traffic sign, which only existed in the former GDR before the reunification and can now be found all over Germany. We are talking about the green arrow, the picture 720 of the StVO. This traffic sign is attached to light signal systems (LZA for short) next to the red light. This green arrow is on a black disc and points to the right. According to § 37 para. 2 no. 1 sentences 8 to 10 StVO, in this case a driver may turn right at the red light sign. First you have to stop in front of the red traffic light and, taking into account the road users who are green, you can also turn when it is red. The pedestrians and cyclists of the approved direction must also be observed.


Drivers from the rural regions of the old federal states in particular have nothing to do with the green arrow. For example, there are two traffic lights in Dresden where you may only turn right and understand with a green arrow. These traffic lights never turn green, because the above mentioned paragraphs of the StVO must be followed. Some drivers are waiting for a green and if they have not driven, they are still waiting today.
