A vehicle transmission is the transmission in the driveline of a vehicle that converts the engine speed to the drive speed. The automatic transmission determines this transmission ratio itself. It selects the gear mainly according to the accelerator pedal position, travel speed and program switch position. In most fully automatic transmissions, the transmission drive shaft is not completely detachably connected to the crankshaft via a torque converter. Inside, planetary sets and multi-plate clutches are connected to the power flow. A distinction is made between planetary attachments, sun gear, ring gear and three planetary gears, sun gear, ring gear and six planetary wheels and the combined planetary set. Together with the two multi-plate clutches, the planetary set allows the gears to be doubled. Reverse gear is achieved with a multi-plate clutch and a freewheel. When combined with 6 planetary gears, there is only one forward gear with the multiple-disc clutch(s). In the last set, which is a combination of several multi-disc clutches and a freewheel, three forward and one reverse gear.In the automotive industry, the 4 common transmission types are on the one hand the "classic automatic transmission", which had its beginnings in the 80s still with 3 gears. Today there are already vehicles with 6-7 gears and depending on the type of vehicle, a clutch has been integrated into the converter to minimize energy loss. On the other hand there is the continuously variable automatic transmission, which has not the best efficiency due to its construction, but due to the control element in the engine these vehicles today almost reach the consumption values of a manually shifted vehicle.Number 3 on the list is the automated manual transmission, which is unbeatable in its economy. Unfortunately there is a shift break during shifting which can be very annoying, that's why these gearboxes are usually only found in low-cost cars.The direct shift gearbox, called DSG, installed by VW in the middle class car since 2006, is a real "hybrid". In combination with the comfort of the "classic automatic and the high efficiency (low consumption, as with manual transmissions), it promises real advantages for the owner.
