Drinking water is transported to the end consumer in water pipes. Water pipes save the"carrying of water" from wells, as was necessary in prehistoric times or, unfortunately, still today in some developing countries. Individual water supply systems in rural areas consist of their own domestic well, sometimes even a few kilometres from the residential and commercial buildings, as well as a water pipe from the well to the house and, if necessary, if the water pressure is too low because, for example, the well is lower than the residential building, also from a pump.The water supply systems in the communities and in the cities consist of several wells from which the drinking water reaches the main reservoirs via water pipes. The end users are then supplied with drinking water via pump systems and the corresponding water pipes.Modern water pipes consist of plastic pipes (previously iron pipes were used), which are of various dimensions. The main water pipe has a considerably larger diameter, which means that the water pressure in this pipe is also relatively high. Hydrants, for example, are connected to the main water pipe from which the water for fire brigades can be taken out. There are also companies that require a higher water pressure, such as public swimming pools. For all other end users the water pressure is already reduced in the course of the water pipe by smaller dimensioned water pipes. The water supplier installs a water meter at the connection point of the water receiver in order to be able to charge the customer for the water consumption. At the same time as the water meter, however, a pressure gauge and a pressure reduction are also installed in the pipe, as too low or too high water pressure can damage technical equipment such as washing machines.
