A plotter is a device that can be used to create curves, function graphs and technical drawings. A special feature is that a plotter can display a vector graphic without prior conversion to a raster graphic. Over the years, this technical device has undergone constant development. The very first plotter was called the X-Y plotter and developed from the "normal" plotter to today's large printers. These are still called plotters and can reproduce prints in very large formats. There are several variants such as the pen plotter, the laser plotter, the flatbed plotter, the photoplotter or the cutting plotter.A pen plotter has only little use. It was originally used for drawing on large paper formats and was replaced by laser printers and inkjet printers. A cutting plotter has a knife instead of a pen, which cuts paper or mostly foil along the entered line. A laser plotter is a further development of the cutting plotter. Here the knife is replaced by a laser, which produces a finer and higher quality cut. A photoplotter creates a copy template with a light head, which can then be used for production.A practical example for the use of plotters is provided by textile printing. Especially in the field of sporting goods, jerseys and underwear are often printed with numbers, names and logos of the sponsors. But a plotter is irreplaceable, because it cuts the fine foils and felt writings accurately.
