A weather vane is a simple instrument for determining the wind direction. The simplest form is a piece of fabric which, when attached in such a way that it can rotate around a fixed point, flutters in the wind and thus indicates the wind direction. An additional wind rose, which indicates the compass directions, makes it easy to determine the wind direction, which in earlier times was mainly used for short-term weather forecasts. Weather vanes were also considered an effective means of protection against disaster in popular belief. Nowadays, windsocks are usually used to determine the wind direction, which can, for example, indicate the wind direction and strength at airports or near motorways and thus warn of gusts or strong cross winds. Traditional weather vanes on the roofs of houses or the tops of towers were often made of metal and were also used for decorative purposes. In addition to unusual versions such as angel figures or even fish-shaped weather vanes, the widespread weathercock in particular falls into this category, which can be traced back to motifs of Christian tradition. In addition, weather vanes play a purely decorative role as a house brand in monument conservation, but also as individual decoration for the roof ridge, representing the house and its inhabitants to the outside world.
