We refer to displays as an electronic component of a more complex device, through which we can read relevant data. The displays have developed enormously in recent years, but even today there are still different models of displays that are used in different areas depending on requirements and tasks. The best-known application of displays that everyone knows is the use of displays in smartphones and other mobile phones. Here there is a tendency towards high-quality display products, which ideally should have a maximum pixel density. The manufacturers give their different displays their own product designations and try to convince customers of the special quality of their products. For example, the super-amoled display from Korean manufacturer Samsung or the new retina display from Apple. However, the differences between the leading manufacturers are marginal and the displays are almost equal in terms of resolution and quality. The displays are not only used in communication devices. In industry, displays are standard equipment on almost every technical device or machine in the production process. Control devices in means of transport also have numerous displays. Our modern televisions are basically nothing more than a large display. Here the resolution plays a decisive role. The response time of the displays is also an important technical component that is decisive for many customers. While the new high-resolution displays are considered expensive when they come onto the market, the digital standard displays, which are installed in older digital watches, for example, continue to fall in price. Since then, numerous companies and research groups around the world have been working on the monitors of tomorrow. However, the basic principle of OLEDs is always the same. A thin, luminous layer is applied to a transparent electrode - one thousandth of a human hair is sufficient. Then comes a second electrode. "In nature there are many examples of luminescent effects. The best known is probably the firefly, which can switch its yellowish light on and off. Scientists distinguish different types of luminescence. Researchers have analysed the underlying principles and found that some natural polymers have semiconductor properties and are therefore suitable for the transport of electrical charges. Such conjugated polymers can now be produced artificially and precisely. Semiconductors and other electrical components will soon no longer depend on crystal structures but can be made of plastics. However, other effects known from crystalline semiconductors can also be achieved with conjugated polymers. The light effect here is parallel to the light emission of the light emitting diodes used for decades. First scientific reports on electroluminescence in organic materials date from 1953. However, the history of electroluminescent (EL) displays did not begin until 1987, when Kodak and shortly thereafter Pioneer decided to invest in this future technology. The development really took off after it was discovered in 1990 that conjugated polymers such as poly(p-phenylene vinylene) are suitable for use in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs).
