Minerals are naturally occurring solids that are formed by geological processes and have a characteristic chemical composition. Another defining feature is the physical crystal structure. Most of the approximately 4600 different minerals are of inorganic origin, some exceptions consist of organic material.Minerals are used as raw materials in different areas. For example, uraninite serves as nuclear fuel for energy generation. Individual components for the extraction of chemical elements are mined from element raw materials. Metalliferous ores belong to this type of raw materials. Due to certain characteristic properties, the raw materials are processed without prior chemical splitting, for example, the mineral quartz is used in the production of quartz glass. In cut form some minerals are used as jewellery or precious stones for the production of jewellery. Further areas of application are the production of cosmetic products and artists' paints.Clay minerals are processed into ceramic products by firing, but they also form the basis of cement together with limestone and sand. The porous expanded clay is produced by a special firing process, which is used, among other things, as an insulating building material and in hydroponics. The special properties of clay minerals are also used for ion exchangers and catalysts and they are used as fillers in various areas such as the plastics and dye industries.
