Compression refrigeration plants use the physical effect of the evaporation heat when the state of aggregation changes from liquid to gaseous. A light-boiling liquid, which is moved in a closed circuit, serves as a heat transfer medium. The so-called refrigerant is first compressed (compressed) by a compressor (supercharger) while absorbing electrical energy and is brought to a higher temperature level than the ambient temperature. In the following heat exchanger (condenser) the refrigerant condenses by releasing heat to the ambient air and is thus changed from a gaseous to a liquid state. The liquid refrigerant is then expanded via a throttle (expansion valve). In the downstream heat exchanger (evaporator), the refrigerant evaporates at low pressure and low temperature and thus brings the chilled goods to the desired temperature. For the heat to flow, the refrigerant must evaporate at a lower temperature than the required temperature of the chilled goods. The compressor sucks in the gaseous refrigerant evaporated by heat absorption. Thus the cycle is closed again.
