Used tires can be a cheap alternative to new tires (summer or winter). These are tyres that were already mounted on a vehicle. When buying used tyres, the tread depth, the so-called DOT number and the overall condition of the tyre must be taken into account.Profile depthMost tyres have an indicator that tells the user whether the tread still meets the minimum requirements. The indicator consists of a small elevation in the tyre tread pattern. If the tread is on the same level as the indicator, this means that the tyre is worn. DOT numberThe DOT number not only provides information about the place of manufacture of the tire, but also what is much more important for a buyer of used tires, how old the tires are. The last part of the DOT number consists of 3 or 4 numbers indicating the calendar week and the year of production. Since 2000, only four-digit week codes have been given. The first two numbers stand for the calendar week, the last two numbers for the year of production (example: Weekly code 0409 = the tyre was used in the 4th week. Calendar week 2009). Tires that are too old quickly lose grip and are therefore a risk factor. Tyres should not be older than 7 years.General conditionIn addition to the tread depth, the condition of the sidewall must be particularly taken into account for the overall condition of the used tyre. If small cracks or dents appear, the tyres are no longer safe and should under no circumstances be driven.
