A lorry (abbreviation truck) or also a lorry or truck is a motor vehicle that has a rigid frame. Trucks are preferred for the transport of goods or merchandise. For this reason, trucks also belong to the category of commercial vehicles. The advantage of a truck is that it can also tow a trailer, which is not possible with a tractor unit. Trucks weighing less than 2.8 tonnes of the maximum authorised mass are not referred to as heavy goods vehicles. Special vehicles such as the dump truck are also not referred to as trucks. The trucks are also differentiated according to the maximum permitted mass. A light truck or a converted car (passenger car) has a maximum permissible mass of 3.5t. This can be driven with the "normal" car driving licence. A ZGM up to 7.5t is referred to as a light truck. The medium-heavy trucks have a maximum weight of 12t and heavy trucks (abbreviation SKW) up to 40t. However, this CMO only applies to Germany. In Denmark, for example, they can weigh up to 60t. In all countries, however, only a total weight of 11.5 tons may be carried per axle. However, the permissible total weight must not be exceeded under any circumstances.
