Zirconia is applied as partially stabilized zirconia (PSZ) or tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (TZP). Both materials exhibit very good mechanical strength, fracture toughness and thermal shock resistance. The coefficient of thermal expansion of these materials is comparable with steel. Zirconia is often used in wear applications requiring improved fracture toughness and stiffness over alumina.
PSZ exhibits very high mechanical strength, fracture toughness and wear resistance. Due to these properties the parts made of PSZ zirconia are used in all technical sectors.
TZP zirconia shows the highest mechanical strength, fracture toughness and wear resistance. Parts made from this material satisfy the highest requirements concerning mechanical properties, surface roughness and edge stability. The specific properties of TZP materials enable the production of highest quality blades with superior quality.

Zirconia ceramics (ZrO₂) are advanced ceramic materials composed primarily of zirconium dioxide. First developed in the 1970s, these ceramics exist in three major crystalline phases: monoclinic (room temperature to 1170°C), tetragonal (1170-2370°C), and cubic (above 2370°C). Through stabilization processes with additives like yttria (Y₂O₃) or magnesia (MgO), zirconia ceramics can maintain desirable phases at room temperature, creating materials with exceptional mechanical and thermal properties.

Key Properties
Mechanical Strength: With flexural strength reaching 1,200 MPa, zirconia surpasses most other ceramic materials.
Fracture Toughness: 5-10 MPa·m¹/² due to transformation toughening mechanism.
Thermal Properties: Low thermal conductivity (2-3 W/m·K) and high thermal expansion coefficient (10-11×10⁻⁶/K).
Biocompatibility: Excellent for medical applications with ISO 13356 certification.
Chemical Resistance: Inert to most acids, alkalis, and organic solvents.
Electrical Properties: Becomes ionic conductor at elevated temperatures (>600°C).

As one of the representative materials of advanced ceramics, zirconium oxide is divided into yttria stabilized zirconia and magnetium stabilized zirconia. Both grades have excellent performance.
