The pictures for a film are made visible during the development process, during which the present silver crystals are made autocatalylically enlarged. Thereby the silver ions, which lie next to the silver nucleus are reduced to black metallic silver. This takes place in a alkaline range between ph 8-9. This process has to then be broken off, so that the necessary graduation can be achieved. After this is an acidic tray (ph 4-5). During this an acetic acid or a citric acid solution is applied. This stops the developement of the picture. This following fixing tray makes the picture light resistant. The still present silver ions would otherwise turn black and therefore the emulsion must be removed.
