The Styrofoam panel has very good insulating properties Styrofoam panels are panels made of expanded polystyrene foam (EPS). Different trade names are known in Germany for these polystyrene sheets. These include floor formats, jackodur, polystyrene or styrodur, which are characterised by different colouring. The expanded polystyrene has become known as Styropor. The inventor was BASF chemist Fritz Stastny in 1949. Since the 1990s, the Industrieverband für Hartschaum e.V. (Industry Association for Rigid Foam) (IHV) held the rights to this name. Only those manufacturers who meet the quality requirements of the IHV may then call their product Styropor.Typical for the Styropor sheets are the 2 to 3 mm large balls that are baked together. Depending on the type of production, these panels are divided into expanded polystyrene foam (EPS) and extruded polystyrene foam (XPS). Due to their high compressive strength and low water absorption, XPS panels made of polystyrene are preferred as insulation of buildings against the ground, the so-called perimeter insulation. The polystyrene sheets also have good thermal insulation properties and thus insulate the outer walls of cellars. The largest purchaser of polystyrene sheets, EPS panels, is the construction industry. As thermal insulation boards that are considered rot-proof, they are an important building material in view of the Energy Saving Ordinance (EnEV). These panels are used for the production of thermal insulation composite facades or also for the insulation of floors against cold rooms. The polystyrene sheets can easily be cut into size or sawn and are therefore easy to process. For this reason, they are often used in model making by architects, garden and landscape planners.
