A farm is defined as an agricultural operating yard where either livestock (dairy, beef cattle) or food such as cereals, vegetables and fruit is grown. In many federal states of Germany more dairy and beef cows are, depending on the geographic and climatic conditions, kept on farms, while pigs, sheep or goats are less common, while in other states in for example shallow and warmer parts of Germany increased cereal production and / or vegetable and fruit plantations is evident.

As part of the alternative movement in society the rural life on farms is often romanticized; this has often nothing in common with the actual life on a farm. Modern farmers are nowadays usually also businesses and have to observe various legal requirements and regulations on a national and EU level. Operating and accounting occupies an important part of everyday work, in addition to physical work such as mucking out stalls, orderng fields, milking cows (which is often automated by machines), driving the cattle out to pasture and back in again. Milking machines, tractors and combine harvesters can be found on most farms.

There are conventionally working farms and so-called organic Farms. The latter undertake for idealistic or consumer-oriented reasons to cultivate animal welfare and use genetically unaltered seed. Also, the electricity on a farm is often generated by renewable energy. So you can increasingly find solar systems on the roofs of barns.
