A tower is a structure defined by the fact that its height is several times its diameter. Towers are often partial components of other larger buildings. The manufacture of towers, or their erection, is and has been carried out in a wide variety of ways and with a wide variety of materials. Towers can be made of brick, wood, steel or reinforced concrete. Tubular steel constructions with a material other than sheathing are also in use. Towers also define themselves by their ability to stand freely and not have to be anchored separately. However, mixed constructions also exist. These are also known as hybrid towers. Furthermore, there are self-emitting transmitter masts which are insulated against the ground and still resemble a tower construction. Towers are mostly vertical constructions. Usually the circumference is tapered in the course to the top of the tower. This is often necessary for static reasons.
