Stone walls made of natural stone to support slopes can only be erected with backfill and do not function as free-standing walls. For this, one would rather use format bricks, which are then placed on a concrete strip foundation. Alternatively, you can of course build two visible sides with the layered brick and work with mortar in between.
However, this type of construction is already a special case, as it is expensive and very complex and only works from a wall thickness of approx. 40cm upwards.
In addition, such a construction always requires a wall covering to protect the natural stone wall from moisture penetration and possible frost damage.
In the normal version as dry masonry, layered masonry normally does not require a concrete foundation but only one made of compacted gravel.
A wall covering is also usually not used for layered masonry, as this would also have to be mortared for stability reasons, but this does not work on a loosely layered wall.
