Shaft joints are designed to transmit rotary movements between shafts which are at a variable or fixed angle to each other or are offset in parallel. If it is not possible to transmit torques in a straight line, shaft joints are the optimum solution. For example, shaft joints with needle bearings are preferred for high speeds and relatively low torques, as is the rule with high-speed angular drives on weaving machines. These are very effective because they are maintenance-free. In the wide range of mechanical engineering with medium speeds and torques, shaft joints with bronze plain bearings are recommended, as they operate without interference even under harsh conditions such as impact loads. The design offers for example mounting holes as square holes, continuous or with groove as well as individual solutions. Double wave joints have a maximum deflection angle of 90 degrees. They establish a connection between parallel staggered shafts within the smallest space or angular staggered shafts. They are used in pairs for uniform rotary movements, for example with cardan shafts. Light shaft joints made of aluminium are manufactured with the same dimensions (DIN 808) as steel shaft joints. However, they convince with a weight saving of up to fifty percent with low loss of strength. To compensate for this loss in strength, the fork bodies are made of specially hardened aluminium alloys.
