A rack is a special gear with teeth distributed on a bar-shaped body. Racks are also divided into spur gear racks and helical gear racks, which are paired with spur gears and helical gears respectively; the tooth profile of the rack is a straight line rather than an involute (for the tooth surface, it is a plane), which is equivalent to a cylindrical gear with an infinite radius of the indexing circle. Features: (1) Since the rack tooth profile is a straight line, each point on the tooth profile has the same pressure angle, which is equal to the inclination angle of the tooth profile. This angle is called the tooth profile angle, and the standard value is 20°. (2) Any straight line parallel to the tooth top line has the same tooth pitch and module. (3) The straight line parallel to the tooth top line and with the tooth thickness equal to the tooth space width is called the index line (center line), which is the baseline for calculating the rack size.

Although the principle of racks is very old, they only gained real importance with industrial development.Racks are used to transfer a rotational movement to a linear movement. A gear wheel (rotational movement) engages the matching teeth of the rack and moves another machine part in horizontal or vertical direction via this rack. The maximum distance of this movement is limited by the length of the rack.Conversely, the rack itself (driven e.g. by a hydraulic cylinder) can move a gear and thus convert a linear movement into a rotary movement.Shorter rack drives are known e.g. from dams or sluice gates. On a much smaller scale racks are also used to open and close the drawers of e.g. CD players or DVD drives in the computer.Rack-and-pinion steering is known from vehicle construction. Here the steering wheel rotation is transmitted to the front wheels via a toothed rack.Endless or toothed racks of great length are found on cogwheel tracks in the mountains. Here the toothed rack is located as a toothed rail between the rails.
