A resistor is an electrical component that generates an ohmic resistance in electrical circuits. Parameter-dependent or non-linear resistors are characterized by the fact that the resistance value depends on further parameters, e.g. temperature, light incidence or pressure. If the resistance value is independent of additional parameters, there is a linear resistance. The latter serves, as a current-voltage converter, for setting an electrical current that is proportional to the applied voltage or vice versa as a voltage-current converter.Applications are for example the division of the electrical voltage in a circuit, as a voltage divider, which is realized by connecting two or more resistors in series or as a current divider, by connecting two or more resistors in parallel. The limitation of electrical current to certain values and the conversion of electrical energy into thermal energy, e.g. in incandescent lamps, heaters or soldering irons. It can also be used as a series resistor for setting an electrical current at a given voltage, as a shunt or working resistor for setting an electrical voltage at a given current.The ceramic carrier in cylindrical form with axial connecting wires is probably the best known design. The desired resistance value is achieved by the resistance material with which the substrate is coated; this is achieved by variations in the layer cover, the composition or the helix.
