Single-phase alternating current is generated with the help of alternating current generators, they belong to the electrical generators. The frequency of the generated alternating current is proportional to the rotor speed, since no commutation takes place, as with DC generators. Usually AC generators are realized today in internal pole machine construction as single-phase synchronous machines.In a magnetic field a rotation of the conductor loop takes place, whereby the magnetic flux through the conductor loop changes constantly and induces a voltage. The speed and the number of pole pairs of the generator determine the frequency of the voltage. This voltage is tapped with the aid of brushes located on the slip rings. The effect of the Lorentz force starts when the conductor loop moves across the magnetic field, which makes mechanical work necessary, as this force inhibits the movement of the conductor loop. It does not matter whether the magnetic field moves around the conductor or the other way around, as it only depends on the relative movement.AC generators are, due to the single-phase AC voltage, only conditionally usable for operation on the mains. Areas of application for power generation are therefore only of secondary importance today. Examples of this are the generators of Deutsche Bahn, wind power plants and small hydropower plants, as well as emergency power generators. The alternating current generator is most widely used as a bicycle dynamo.
