Particle filters have the function of reducing the particles present in the exhaust gases of diesel engines, heaters and other diesel, petrol or oil-operated devices. The carbon-containing fine dust has been regarded as harmful to health for many years. This fine dust is produced during the combustion process, whereby the harmful particles consist mainly of unburned hydrocarbons and soot. During the condensation of hydrocarbons, droplets are formed which contain these small particle germs. If there is sulphur in the petrol or if an engine is operated with heating oil, even more droplets are formed and the amount of fine dust is increased. The topic became popular when the state decided to gradually introduce environmental zones in Germany to promote environmental protection and to clean up overcrowded city traffic. Since then, these zones, which are usually located in the centres of larger cities, may only pass through vehicles that have an environmental sticker. Since only vehicles that produce little fine dust can acquire such stickers, the owners of older cars, trucks, agricultural machinery and motorcycles in particular were confronted with problems. Nowadays, soot particle filters are installed in all new vehicles. Conversion and function The good news is that you can retrofit both vehicles and other devices and systems. With so-called wall flow filters, the mode of operation is that the particles are deposited on the surface of the filter wall during use and the differential pressure increases. If they overtake a certain threshold value, the filter starts its regeneration and the stored particles are burned. The filter system is self-cleaning, so to speak. The monitoring of the differential pressure as well as the control of the self-cleaning are in the motor control and therefore varies. During the combustion of the particles, fuel must be injected via a direct injection system, which increases the exhaust gas temperature. This is often done using a downstream oxidation catalyst. During combustion, residues remain in the form of additives contained in the oil. These lead to ash deposits in the particle filter, which can cause power losses. Many manufacturers therefore prescribe the use of oils with low ash formation. Also an oil dilution can increase this, as well as a too high oil level. The high heating can cause older particle filters to burn through. Upgrading older vehicles and devices For older diesel vehicles and petrol vehicles that do not have a corresponding universal filter, this can be retrofitted. Since no pressure sensors or other sensors are required for regeneration, and the engine control units do not have to be recoded or deactivated, conversion for gasoline and diesel vehicles is possible without problems. Checking the key number of a vehicle provides information about the correct model. Once the catalytic converter has been installed correctly, you can buy an environmental sticker and have the registration certificate for driving free entered in the vehicle registration document in the environmental zones. As this serves environmental protection, a refund application can be submitted. For wood heaters and stoves, fine dust filters can also be retrofitted to reduce the volume of oil in the air at home. However, the conversion and replacement of the fine dust filters in the heating system should be carried out by a specialist. In robotics, fine dust filters are used to avoid localization problems. Since some manufacturers do not install oxidation catalysts, it is possible that the collected soot can no longer burn out completely, especially when driving a short distance frequently or when equipment is usually only in operation for a short period of time. A particle filter is a wearing part and gradually becomes clogged, so that it can no longer empty itself. An emergency regeneration, which can reset the particle occurrence, becomes necessary. In vehicles, this defect is noticed when a lamp lights up to ask the driver to check the soot particle filter. If it is not too heavily overloaded, it can be rinsed with water using a high-pressure cleaner and washed out or the soot can be removed by dry cleaning. In the worst case, this must be removed, replaced and a new one installed. If soot filters are constantly running too hot and are saturated, you can outwit them by trying to pierce them. As a result of this opening, they are no longer as tight, the counterpressure is reduced and overheating could be lower. By the cleaning and the added hole one can often still bypass the replacement of the gasoline filter a little or even completely. The inner life can be seen on a cross section.
