The moulding shop is an important component of every iron foundry. This is where the hollow moulds are produced, into which the liquid melt is poured in the subsequent production process. These hollow moulds, which are only used once, are produced using specially prepared moulding sand. The pattern shop first produces a two-part model of the part to be cast. Here the shrinkage must be taken into account, as the liquid mass shrinks by approx. 1% during cooling. The lower part of this model is now placed in the lower part of the moulding box and covered with moulding sand. Suitable inserts ensure that filling channels for the liquid mass (so-called funnel) and outlet channels for soaking the air (so-called riser) are formed. The moulding sand is now pressed and the lower part of the model is removed for further use.If the finished casting contains cavities, for example, so-called cores are inserted. These cores are usually made of specially prepared clay. To keep these cores in place against the buoyancy forces of the liquid casting mass, core irons or supports are used.The process is now repeated with the upper part of the pattern and the upper part of the moulding box. The two parts of the moulding box are joined together and are now available for the further production process.
