    The sand casting process works with clay-bonded or resin-bonded moulding sand. It allows the production of individual pieces up to the largest possible dimensions as well as small, medium and large series. It offers the greatest freedom of design. The required models are relatively inexpensive, can be quickly created and modified if necessary. The hand moulding process is suitable for small, medium to large individual pieces and small quantities, the machine moulding process for small, medium and large series. Since the mould is mechanically separated from the model in machine moulds, the accuracy is slightly higher than that of manual moulds.machine moulds are generally used for small and medium-sized castings. In the manual moulding technique, mechanical aids are often used, e.g. for sand compaction, and, if necessary, model separation from the mould, mould separation, is also carried out mechanically. As a result, it is no longer possible to make a clear distinction between the two techniques. Today, more than 200 moulds can be produced by machine per hour with modern moulding plants. By using particularly fine moulding sand, synthetically prepared with special clays and swelling agents, sand castings with a particularly smooth surface can be produced. If necessary, the cost-benefit ratio, which is influenced by the increased expenditure, must be taken into account. In general, sand castings are produced by gravity casting. If dimensionally accurate, thin-walled cast parts are required or for the production of prototypes, the low-pressure sand casting process is also used.
