Fuels are burnable material, which contains stored energy. These can be made usuable through oxidation, hence burning. Radioactive elements such as plutonium and uranium are on the other hand not burnt but rather produce energy by means of nuclear fission. In the case of hydrogen it is also through nuclear fusion. In general such materials, which are burnt are used to obtain heat energy. Fuels are on the other hand used in combustion motors. Heating oil for example if a fuel, which is also distributed as diesel. Furthermore artifical and natural fuels are divided. Natural fuels are taken unaltered from nature and used. Artifical are first manufactured by means of chemical processes. They are however obtained from natural resources. Necessary for the quality regulation of such energy carriers is their heating value or also fuel value. This refers to the ability to emit heat.
