Flat plate collectors referes to a particularly constructed type of solar panels. They are designed to gather the suns energy and through the physical process of usable heat to change it. This is used for example in the heating of drinking water, so that every year a quarter of energy will be saved.

Normally flat plate collectors consist of absorbers, a thermal insulation, an AR coated transparent glass covering and a frame. The absorber represents the centerpiece. It is made from aluminium or copper sheets and has a dark, possibly black special coating. With a high quality coating up to 90 percent of the sun's short wave length rays can be captured.

The heated pipes, carry the so called heat carrying liquid, which is often a mix of water and ethylene glycol. This mixture is first frozen to a temperature of -23 degrees celsius and then it is optimal for use in a flat plate collector. On the other hand it has a boiling point of 150 degrees celsius. The heated liquid brings the heat to a solar storage tank.

The flat plate collectors are used for in buildings for heating of warm water or as a kombination for warm water and heater support. They can be installed in new buildings or/and during the renovation of older buildings without any problems. Normally the flat plate collectors are implemented in a flat roof, on the roof or in some cases as an optional attractive in-roof mounting.
