Tolerance sleeves, also called tolerance rings, are a cost-effective shaft-hub connection for series products. If catalogue sizes can be used, this also applies to small and very small series. Very high torques can be transmitted with tolerance sleeves.
The alternative shaft and bearing fastening by means of tolerance sleeves is a connection that is detachable and friction-locked, and thus has cost and/or technical advantages compared to keyway connections or press fits. It allows high transmittable torques and this at operating temperatures up to 250 °C. Tolerance sleeves are therefore ideal connecting elements for material combinations that have different coefficients of expansion, e.g. steel bearings or ceramic bearings in aluminium housings. In principle, they can also be used as a kind of safety or overload clutch.
standard dimensions made of carbon steel are usually available from stock. Tolerance sleeves made of stainless steel are available for aggressive environmental conditions.
