An algorithmic sequence of commands for processing by computer systems or other machines is called a program. Programmer is a person who designs dedicated programs or extends or corrects existing programs.Je according to type, age and thematic orientation, computer systems or automatons can understand different command sets, which are also called programming languages. Programmers are usually not only capable of designing algorithms, but are also proficient in one or more programming languages. Programming languages are generally subdivided according to their degree of abstraction. For example, a CNC programmer is able to create programs for numerical control of machine tools for the production of complex workpieces. CNC programs, however, contain simple control commands for the tools and have a low degree of algorithmic abstraction.A programmer who writes very complex, hardly or not hardware-related programs is usually also referred to as a software developer. Software developers work with so-called higher programming languages, whose commands require greater background knowledge and greater abstraction. Modern software such as ERP systems or office applications are developed with these programming languages.Also purely technical categorizations are common. For example, a programmer who designs queries for databases is called a database developer. A programmer who writes interfaces or driver programs is called a system programmer.
